The Radcliffe-on-Trent Male Voice Choir is already one of the most successful male voice choirs in the East Midlands, but is never content to sit on its laurels.
Earlier this year, Victoria Barlow took over the mantle of musical director and has already put her stamp on the choir.
Under her direction the future is looking very exciting. And it isn’t just the singing – the choir has a very active social life and positively welcomes new members.
Currently the choir is about 70 strong, but they are always looking to increase the membership, and you don’t need to have any previous singing experience.
To encourage anyone who might be interested in seeing what the choir is all about they are holding an open workshop evening, particularly aimed at potential new members.
It takes place on Thursday 9th February at 7.15pm in the Methodist Church on Shelford Road in Radcliffe.
There is no need to book in advance. All you need to do is just turn up on the evening and you will be made very welcome by the choir.
Anyone requiring any further information can contact Tony Dale by telephoning 0115 912 0833.
There is more information about the choir on its website radcliffeontrentmalevoicechoir.org and you can follow them on Facebook.

Radcliffe-on-Trent resident Vince Eager appeared alongside huge names like Tommy Steele, Marty Wilde, Joe Brown, Cliff Richard, Adam Faith and Billy Fury in the 1950s and 1960s. He made over 100 television appearances, recorded for Decca and EMI Records, appeared with and befriended top American artistes touring this country and become a household name.
More recently, Vince starred in the award-winning West End musical ‘Elvis’ and spent 14 years in Florida, where he was a cruise director for a luxury American cruiseliner. Following his return from Florida, Vince nurtured the idea of involving his pals and peers as guests on a new CD. He first approached Marty Wilde, Joe Brown, Chas Hodges and Albert Lee to find they were all more than happy to participate.
Meetings followed with the Western Star Recording Company, which eventually culminated in Vince securing a three-CD album recording deal with the first CD due to be released in February 2012.
Vince and the Memphis Tones will be appearing at The Grange on 28th December. Tickets are £8 and available from the Grange Hall, National Dry Cleaners in Radcliffe-on-Trent, or from 0115 933 3009.

Rushcliffe Borough Council’s customer services contact point has moved home in Radcliffe. The Council will now provide frontline services on a Thursday at St Mary’s Church Hall from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
The Council is working with Rushcliffe Advice Network (RAN), who already operate from the hall. Changing opening times to match those of RAN will ensure Radcliffe residents have a comprehensive advice service on the same day in the same location.
The Council provides face-to-face services to customers giving advice on recycling, benefits, planning, crime prevention and much more. RAN provides free, confidential advice on benefits, debt, housing and other issues with no appointment needed. It is a voluntary group staffed by trained and experienced volunteers.

A woman from Radcliffe has just turned her dreams into reality thanks to two local entrepreneurs. Joanne Higgott enjoyed driving her Smart car and came upon an idea of using them for a one-person taxi. The bright idea then became a two-year struggle to turn her plan into a viable business. First, Joanne made a tentative approach to Rushcliffe Borough
Council taxi licensing, before the idea was left on the back burner for around 18 months, until Nottingham entrepreneurs, Anthony Smith and Michael Roberts, agreed to back the business providing consent was given by the council.
Joanne (pictured) said: “Cabs4one aims to make taking a taxi extremely safe for both female passengers and female drivers. I have already hired six unemployed people to give them a chance and I hope to recruit more over the coming months.
“Our research shows that over 60% of taxi journeys are taken by single passengers who don’t really don’t need picking up in a five, six, or eight-seater car, so we’re trying to do our bit to keep emissions down.”
Cabs4one are based in Radcliffe-on-Trent and will be concentrating their service in Radcliffe, Bingham, Newton, Shelford and surrounding areas.
Councillor Eddie Fearon, chairman of Rushcliffe’s licensing committee, said: “I am very encouraged to see a local business taking the lead in providing environmentally-friendly Smart cars, with female drivers available also. The council was approached by Joanne Higgott and was only too pleased to be able to help with the licensing of the Smart cars, which in turn has given employment to previously unemployed people and brought a much-needed service to the Radcliffe area.”

Radcliffe-on-Trent residents have rejected its Parish Council’s recommendation to close three polling stations in the village. The proposal follows Rushcliffe Borough Council’s invitations for all local councils to comment on current provision.
The proposed closures would mean hundreds of residents having to travel two or three times the current distance to cast their vote.
A petition of Radcliffe residents rejecting these closure proposals collected 892 signatures in less than a fortnight. Around 95% of residents approached added their signature, reflecting their strong desire to retain the current polling stations. The petition has been submitted to Rushcliffe Borough Council, which will make the final decision at its meeting on 15th December.
The three polling stations under threat are Bingham Road Pavilion, which serves Radcliffe voters living north of the A52, Craig Moray which serves many elderly residents, and the British Legion building.
Radcliffe would be left with just two polling stations, one serving 338 voters at Saxondale and the other located at Grange Hall, serving 3,992 electors. Car parking at Grange Hall would also be a major issue, whereas the polling stations under threat all have good parking facilities.
The polling station review was an agenda item of a Parish Council committee meeting lasting just 15 minutes. Questions asked at the meeting on the usage and costs of the polling stations were not answered.
Dave Barton, secretary of Radcliffe Labour Party, said: “There is no doubt that the loss of these traditional polling stations would reduce the turnout in future elections. We should be making it easier to vote – not more difficult.”

Pupils and staff at Radcliffe-on-Trent Junior School have been rewarded for their ongoing environmental, ecological and sustainable approach to learning, by receiving the Eco Schools Green Flag award. The school played a significant part in the village’s recent successful Greening campaign and changed its own eco-code to help promote awareness of household emissions.
Older pupils have had a wide range of lessons on the top and the school has forged links with schools in both Kenya and Uganda. The younger classes have looked at their community and studied developing wildlife corridors and re-establishing pond areas. They also focused on the importance of insects on our food chain. The children created habitat areas within the school grounds and grew vegetables to use in the school kitchen.
Head teacher, Steve Arnold, said: “The pupils have taken a direct role in all phases of the eco-school criteria and proved just how knowledgeable, creative and committed they all are in raising their awareness towards climate change. The children were so eager to share information that the assessor didn’t even need me to add any other comments.”

RadVentures will host a very special world-famous comedy play at Grange Hall in Radcliffe on Friday 23rd September (8pm). ‘Tartuffe’ is certainly one of the historic comedy greats, which amongst its many inspirations gave birth, allegedly, to the Carry On comedy films of the 50s and 60s.
Lindah Kiddey told The Local News: “The famous table scene is considered to be one of the funniest comic set pieces every written for the stage.
“Audiences should prepare themselves to meet con men, gullible ladies, disguises, thwarted lovers and strangely stupid gentlemen, as the 2011 human condition is put under the historical microscope.
The stunning play is as topical today as it was in the 17th century.
Tartuffe is the first of three RadVentures professional touring events running up to Christmas and early 2012.”
Tickets cost £8 and are available from National Dry Cleaners on Main Road or by calling 0115 911 8625.
The play is suitable for family audiences with children aged 12-13 years+.
