Pupils at West Bridgford Junior School made a drama out of food waste as part of this year’s National Recycle Week. Members of Nottinghamshire County Council’s Schools Waste Action Club (SWAC) team visited the school last month.
Supporting the theme of Love Food Hate Waste, they worked with pupils in special drama workshops to look at the escalating problem of food waste in this country, thrown away both at home and in school.
The end result was a short performance in front of the whole school at the end of the day, which looked at some of the practical ways of dealing with food waste.
Councillor Richard Butler, Nottinghamshire County Council’s portfolio holder for environment, said: “The session was fun and motivating for pupils, whilst at the same time conveying an important message.
“The pupils spent the morning preparing their drama, with the curtain up on the finished performance at 2.30pm.
“Wasting food can cost the average family as much as £50 a month and has a huge environmental impact.
“If we reduce the amount of food we throw away it would save the equivalent of at least 20 million tonnes of carbon dioxide — that’s like taking one in every four cars off our roads.
“The SWAC team’s school workshops are a great way to get this message across in a fun and informative way.”

Friends of the Hook in Lady Bay are offering volunteers a good workout if you pop along on the first Sunday of each month. Hacking, stretching, pulling, carrying and walking will help keep you fit and the Hook fit for all to use. Meet by the Reed Bed, opposite the end of Melbourne Road, at 2pm on Sunday 6th March and on Wednesday evenings throughout April.
A spokesperson for the group told The Local News: “The Hook is a designated a Local Nature Reserve (LNR) and is owned and maintained by Rushcliffe Borough Council.
We, as a voluntary organisation, help to preserve and manage the Hook to protect the wildlife and the area for local people, in conjunction with Nottinghamshire Wildlife trust, who are very pro-active in giving us help and advice and are a vital link liasing with
the council.
“We have two local councillors on the committee as well as a member of Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust. The rest of the committee are local people interested in helping to preserve and improve the Hook. Work already carried out has involved the council making a silt trap to remove particles and a reed bed to improve the water quality for the water voles. “There’s also been the planting of a public orchard for all to see and use, the planting of wildflower seeds, yellow rattle, to attract insects, particularly butterflies, removal of bushes and shrubs to open up spaces for wildlife, planting of black poplar trees and the ongoing problem of removing the notifiable weed that grows by water courses.”

I refer to your letter which I came across recently (Local News – September) from Vanda in West Bridgford.
In terms of cleanliness, all the areas you mentioned are routinely cleaned. However, we will make sure that the frequency is looked at if there’s been an increase in litter and other mess.
We will contact the County Council to take up the issue of excessive weeds as this is something they deal with. Rest assured environmental cleanliness remains a top priority in Rushcliffe and we are keen to maintain the high levels of public satisfaction with street cleanliness.
The school was asked to come up with a design for the side of the vehicle that would be colourful and bright and remind residents to recycle wherever they can.
Councillor Debbie Mason said: “We were delighted to receive all of the designs from the children and we had a very difficult job deciding which ones to choose to put on the side of the vehicle. The imagination the children showed in their drawings was fantastic and now we have converted their ideas and drawings into a great reminder about the benefits of recycling for all to see.”
Brian Hillary, head teacher at the school, added: “As a school we are very keen on environmental issues, such as how to become greener, so we jumped at the chance to work with our local council. I think the vehicle looks great and I’m very proud of all of the children for getting so involved and coming up with such great designs.”

Following the success of the same event last year, Radcliffe-on-Trent Parish Council is to stage another Village Pride Day. This year’s event will take place on Saturday 31st July. Local residents are being asked to join local councillors for an organised litter pick and clean-up session in the village, with the event being based at The Grange.
Volunteers will be asked to join councillors from 10am on the Saturday morning to go off into the village for an hour to pick up litter and weeds etc. Everyone taking part will be provided with gloves, a litter snatcher and a black bag for any rubbish they collect.
Coffee and biscuits will be served in The Grange for those returning after their 60-minute collecting stint. Meanwhile, the black sacks will be returned to the start point, and from here they will be collected by the Rushcliffe Borough Council Streetwise team.

The dumped items were carelessly thrown out of their car into the pretty countryside after a relative’s house had been cleared, but the mess was soon spotted by staff from Rushcliffe’s Streetwise service who gathered crucial evidence before clearing the waste away. The men were then easily traced and taken to court resulting in total fines of £750.
The crackdown then continued with another successful prosecution of Keiron Watts of West Bridgford, who pleaded guilty to dumping two sofas on land behind the Becket School in West Bridgford. Reports were made to the Council by an eye witness who observed the incident taking place and recorded the details that allowed Mr Watts to be traced. At court he was fined a total of £450.
Ben Adams, neighbourhood manager, said: “Rushcliffe is a great place to live, work and relax, but sometimes the antisocial activities of certain individuals create a headache for others. We want to keep our area looking good and prosecuting those who fly-tip is an important part of getting across the message that this type of behaviour is unacceptable.”
