There are a couple of Mosaic Workshops taking place in Edwalton over the next few months. On Saturday 17th September (10am-4pm) there’s a one-day workshop to make an exterior wall plaque. Are you free to help keep the Holy Rood Church garden in Edwalton in good order on Saturdays between 10am and 12noon? Coffee and refreshments are provided. There is an annual outing, summer tea party and a Christmas dinner each year. Many people enjoy the garden with its seats and walks. Some bring sandwiches or a book, others sit quietly to collect their thoughts. All ages are welcome to help out.

EDWALTON ARTIST HEADS OFF TO BLENHEIM PALACE

Mosaic artist Julie Vernon has been selected from hundreds of applicants to showcase her work at Blenheim Palace. It will be part of the Art, Design and A Taste of Summer event taking place from the 28th to 30th May. Julie was identified as one of the UK’s top new emerging designers and awarded one of the 10 places available showcasing the work of talented new designer makers.
Julie told The Local News: “I am completely thrilled to have been chosen and can’t wait to get going on my designs. This is a new venture for me and a really exciting time.
“I got my first break last year when selected for Nottinghamshire Creative 2010, an initiative organised by Nottinghamshire County Council to encourage creative businesses in the region to thrive. This gave me the confidence to really go for it.”
Event organiser, Angela Bartlett, added: “I am delighted to be able to offer Julie an opportunity to show her work to the discerning visitors at Art, Design & A Taste of Summer. Her refreshing mosaic panels will create a vibrant and attractive display and will be a great asset to the Emerging Designers Pavilion.”
As well as exhibiting and selling work, Julie is also passionate about community arts and you will find her over the coming months working with families and volunteers to produce community mosaics for Arnot Hill Park and Lenton Peace Garden.

RADIO PLAYS IN EDWALTON

Edwalton Drama Group are putting on an evening of Radio Plays on Saturday 12th March at Edwalton Village Hall on Vicarage Lane in Edwalton. There will be two plays with an interval, where a glass of wine will be served.
The two plays are both light hearted comedies and will comprise of a play about Sherlock Holmes to be followed by The Scarlet Pimpernel. As is usual in radio plays there will be a lot of sound effects!
Tickets will cost £6 on the door, or from Pam Gardner (box office) on 0115 914 5535. The glass of wine will be included. The plays will start at 7.30pm.

MOASAIC WORKSHOPS IN EDWALTON

Following the success of the Mosaic Workshops in Edwalton in the past, new dates have now been announced. Places limited so booking is essential.
Saturday 26th March: One-day workshop to make a mosaic mirror or wall plaque (10am-4pm).
Saturday 14th May: A fun two-hour workshop to make a mosaic coaster (10am-12noon).
Mosaic Fridays: A four-week course on 17th June, 24th June, 1st July and 8th July.

EDWALTON OVER 70S CLUB

A club for all local over 70s is being formed. Its purpose is to promote contact and friendship amongst the over 70s but also to provide both a bridge to younger generations and an effective local voice.
Meetings will normally take place in the afternoon, regularly once a month, in the Church Rooms. Anyone interested can call John Quinton on 0115 923 2914.

TIME FOR A SING SONG BY MIRABILE

Mirabile Ensemble is a local small four-part ladies singing group. They are holding a concert on Saturday 20th November at 7.30pm in Edwalton Church, and the programme will vary from Brahms to folk to popular music. Tickets will be available on the door or by telephoning 07749 504 169.
Carolyn Owen told The Local News: “Our previous musical director, Joy Nicol, worked with Cantamas and created Mirabile herself. A very popular local music teacher and personality, Joy unfortunately died last year, but Mirabile have reformed in her memory .
“We have a new musical director from Italy and we are keen to reach our past audiences and supporters to announce our return to the concert and weddings etc.
“We are also holding a further concert in Farnsfield Church near Southwell on Friday 17th December at 8pm.”

Get creative and learn how to mosaic with local artist Julie Vernon, who is currently working with nine other selected artists as part of Nottinghamshire Creative 2010. She said: “Making mosaics is fun, creative and thoroughly addictive. Anyone can have a go, no drawing or artistic skills required and people are often thrilled by the results.”
