He was presented with his award by former England batsman, Nick Knight, at the one-day international between England and Bangladesh at Trent Bridge.
Paul (pictured right) was presented with a coaching certificate, as part of the Sky Sports ECB Coach Education Programme. Knight is now one of the pundits for Sky’s cricket coverage. Sixteen coaches from the Midlands area met Nick on the pitch during the change of innings.
Over 100 coaches from across the country are being acknowledged by the programme’s ‘Reward and Recognition’ scheme, which comprises on-pitch presentations throughout the summer by various cricket legends, including the Sky Sports commentary team.
With over 10 years of involvement in cricket coaching, Paul is currently lead coach at West Bridgfordians Cricket Club. Paul has raised the profile of cricket in the borough of Rushcliffe and West Bridgfordians are now the biggest club in Nottinghamshire with seven senior, 13 boys and two girls sides.
All of this has grown from Paul’s decision in 1997 to build the club up from a grassroots level, and by 2009 the club had 230 junior members with 15 junior teams playing in structured cricket leagues, whilst being coached by 19 qualified coaches.
The club has become the biggest set -up in Nottinghamshire through the vision and enthusiasm of Paul.
He told The Local News: “It’s been a very enjoyable day and nice to catch up with the other coaches. Thanks to Stewart Burrows and Keith Tongue and Sky Sports for their support of the Coach Education Programme.”
The Sky Sports ECB Coach Education Programme aims to attract and train coaches at all levels of cricket in England and Wales, from schools cricket to the international game.
Since the beginning of Sky’s sponsorship in 2006, over 23,000 coaches have gone through the scheme, more than triple the original target. There have been 10,000 newly qualified coaches in the last 12 months, which is 77% up on the first two years, and now for every professional cricketer in England and Wales, there are over 100 grassroot coaches.
The new programme coincides with the government’s Cook4Life scheme, and gives school children practical cooking skills and the knowledge they need to improve their fitness.
The initiative uses the prestige and facilities of Trent Bridge Cricket Ground to inspire young people to make positive choices about their lifestyle.
Wicket! centre manager, Claire Kiggins, said: “There is a lot of interest in the national obesity strategy and we wanted to link into it and reinforce the key messages to the pupils that visit
the centre.
“The programme of events includes classroom sessions and practical learning in the professional kitchen with the Trent Bridge chefs and the children have enjoyed taking part. Participants also enjoyed a tour of the ground and took part in a cricket coaching session.”

After a winter spent honing their skills in the nets at a variety of indoor facilities, there is light at the end of the tunnel for Radcliffe Cricket Club’s junior members. Registration night will be held in the clubhouse on Friday 16th April from 6.15pm, with the first outdoor junior coaching session being held the following week (Friday 23rd April)
As always, hot food will be on sale from the BBQ, the bar will be fully-stocked with a selection of wines, beers, and soft drinks, and coaches and committee members will be on hand to answer any queries.
With dual grounds and arguably the best junior coaching programme on offer across the county, a total of 15 Radcliffe juniors played county representative cricket in 2009. More than than 17 represented Rushcliffe district and/or the NYCL at Notts Interleague level, and two are currently in the ECB/Notts Emerging Player Programme.
Parents are encouraged to download and print junior membership documents from the club website at radcliffecc.org.uk. Completed forms accompanied by the appropriate payment should be handed in on arrival at the clubhouse. The cost of annual junior membership remains unchanged this season at only £20.
Please contact Dan on 07702 301 440 or Bill Brown on 07815 313 427 for advice or further details.

By Tristan Hill
As I work in the private sector of health care I am well aware that many patients feel they cannot afford treatment with an osteopath. Many are unaware of the benefit that just one session can bring, be it via treatment, or perhaps more importantly by gaining a better understanding of their pain. With this in mind I will be holding a charity consultation day on Monday 15th March to help raise money for Bingham’s local cricket club (BCC), who are helping local youngsters discover a great new past time.
Treatment normally costs £35, but on this day I will only be asking for a donation, of which 100% will go to BCC youth development. I would suggest £20, but it’s whatever you can afford.
Please take this opportunity to seek help and to raise some money for a local club. Clinic hours are Monday to Friday from 8am until 7pm. The charity day is only open to new patients. Call 01949 839 238 or visit the website www.binghamosteopath.co.uk

The club have also announced plans for a new girls cricket team. After striking a partnership with Parkwood Leisure, the company who run Bingham Leisure Centre, a new three-lane net bay has been installed in the main hall at the complex, which will allow the club to run senior nets. These sessions will run from 8.05-10.00pm on a Tuesday evening. Meanwhile, a junior net will run between 8am and 12noon on a Saturday morning.
In addition, 2010 will see the introduction of a new girls hardball team which will compete in the Nottingham Junior League. The club has been running after-school sessions at Toot Hill School, with around 15 girls aged 11 to 15 taking part. They are now welcoming girls in school years 7 to 11 who might be interested in joining regular training sessions over the winter and spring.
Club development officer, Paul Maylard-Mason, said: “Junior cricket at the club has developed massively at Bingham over recent years with the addition of so many young players and coaches. Our Under-13 side collected our first junior trophy last year and we are hoping to become a ‘Clubmark’ club by the end of this season.
“It has been noticeable that more girls have got involved with our Kwik Cricket programme, so the decision to start a girls team was a natural extension of that. We were helped by some funding from Sports Unlimited and now we hope to give girls the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of England’s successful World Cup and Ashes-winning ladies team.”
Coaching is organised by ECB-qualified and CRB-checked coaches. For more information call Paul on 07817 983 285, email mayliem@aol.com or visit the website bingham.play-cricket.com

Clifton Village Cricket Club celebrated their 125th Anniversary in style both on and off the field this year. After starting life in 1884 as a little village team drawing from a small bunch of villagers, they have this season claimed the county’s prize title of 2009 Nottinghamshire Premier League Champions. In addition to this their Junior Section flourished, with their Under 13 team losing only one game all season as they won their league for the first time.
On the field success is attributed in no small part to the developments carried out off the field over the last 12 months. The club now boasts a completely refurbished pavilion thanks largely to a £50,000 grant received from the Landfill Communities Fund of Waste Recycling Group (WRG) administered by the Environmental Body WREN, and sponsorship packages from The Monkey Tree in West Bridgford and Willows Sports Centre in Derby.
Club spokesman Andy Walters said: “The redevelopment of the pavilion has enabled us to improve the social benefits offered by the club and we have already seen an increase in junior membership as a result. An extension to the sponsorship package we received from the Monkey Tree in West Bridgford will help bring this all together, and further proves what a fantastic commitment to sport at grass roots the owners of the Monkey Tree have.”
Treasurer for the club, Richie Harrison, added: “Gaining the grant from WREN was a massive boost for both our club and the local community. This funding has provided a facility that numerous members of the local community will benefit from for many years. I would definitely recommend any other club or group investigate the possibilities of funding through them.”
