Cotgrave Leisure Centre is one of eight across the county to benefit from new changing facilities for disabled children. The scheme has now been completed thanks to money from Nottinghamshire County Council’s Aiming High for Disabled Children programme.
Councillor John Cottee, Nottinghamshire County Council’s cabinet member for culture and community, said: “Our aim is to help transform the lives of disabled children and their families across the county.
“We want Nottinghamshire to be a great place for all children and young people to grow up. I am delighted with the new facilities and equipment and hope that they will help young people across the county lead an active and healthy lifestyle.”
The changing room revamp includes a changing bed, a hoist in the changing room, support rails and a pool chair.

Over the past few weeks there has been an increase in thefts from sheds, out buildings and garages in the Cotgrave area. Nottinghamshire Police are offering the following advice…
Secure the access to your shed by locking gates and using thorny bushes next to walls and fences.
Have you visibly marked the contents of your shed? Make a note of serial numbers and photograph valuable tools, plants and ornaments.
External security lights which are activated by movement are a useful deterrent.
Doors and windows of sheds need securing. Metal grills and locks will help make doors and windows look less vulnerable.
Use coach bolts or non-return screws to secure door hinges and locks.
Chain cycles, movers, ladders and tools to a ground anchor or similar device.
Alarms for sheds are inexpensive.
Think like a burglar. Would you be able to break into your shed with ease? Have you done all you can to prevent you being a victim of crime?
Examine your insurance policies. Check that out buildings are covered in your policy.

Local Jet petrol station, Cotgrave Service Station, has been recognised as the best in the Midlands at the industry-leading Forecourt Trader Awards 2011. The prestigious awards ceremony took place in London and saw more than 650 retailers, suppliers and brand representatives join together to celebrate the petrol retailing industry’s success.
The Forecourt Trader of the Year Awards are the showcase for the petrol retailing industry – recognising and rewarding those businesses at the forefront of their profession, that continue to thrive in an increasingly competitive world. Cotgrave Service Station stood out as the leader in the Midlands in its size category. It was hailed by the awards judging panel as being a fantastic example of a family-run business that strives to put its local community and customers first.
Lee Whiteman, owner of the Jet site, said: “We’re delighted to have won this award and to be recognised at such an influential national event. I’m very proud of the work we’ve undertaken recently to improve the forecourt and strengthen our customer offering. This award is great recognition of the investment we’re putting back into our local community.
“We appreciate that our local community is the lifeblood of our business and we’re actively involved in a range of activities throughout the year – from sponsoring the local school football and cricket teams, to helping towards the village Christmas celebrations.”
Wayne Oakes, Jet’s regional manager for the Midlands, added: “Cotgrave Service Station is held in very high regard by its customers locally, so it’s fantastic to see this recognition at a national level. The recent £120,000 refurbishment programme, which included the addition of new pumps and improved access for deliveries resulting in reduced queues for fuel, is just one example of Lee and his team’s commitment to putting customers first.”

Motorists travelling to Cotgrave are being warned about major changes to the A46 as part of the ongoing Newark to Widmerpool improvements. This key route in the county is being dualled and construction began back in 2009. Northbound traffic was switched at the end of October on to a 3.5 mile section of new carriageway between Stragglethorpe and Saxondale. Vehicles now use slip roads at the new Saxondale roundabout to rejoin the existing A46.
Southbound traffic was switched on to the new carriageway at the start of the month. The northbound entry and exit slip roads at the Stragglethorpe junction will now be closed for around four weeks to allow what has been a temporary section of road to be re-constructed to form the final slip roads.
Traffic travelling towards the Stragglethorpe junction from either Nottingham Road or Stragglethorpe Road wanting to join the A46 northbound is being diverted south on the A46 to Owthorpe junction, from where it can turn round and rejoin the northbound A46.
Traffic travelling north on the A46 wishing to leave at the Stragglethorpe junction is being diverted to Saxondale, where it will turn round and join the A46 southbound.
Highways Agency senior project manager, Geoff Bethel, said: “This is an exciting milestone for us as a significant section of the new carriageway is being brought into use.
“We would however advise drivers that their usual route is going to change and what is normal one day will be very different the next. People also need to bear in mind that the new section is not the final, finished arrangement and will still be subject to a speed limit of 40mph.
“Motorists need to pay particular attention to the traffic management and, as the new road is some distance away from the existing A46, we would recommend they follow the road signs rather than their sat navs.”

Sophie’s Academy of Performing Arts celebrated the end of another very successful year with a Summer Showcase last month. The strong choreography, great enjoyment and increased performance technique shown by the students indicate why the dance school goes from strength to strength.
The highlight this year was the invitation for some students to perform at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, an event which was a huge sucess and a great experience for all involved.

The owner of a local bus company has apologised to his customers following news that their route will be axed. Premiere boss, Steve Greaves, says he is “gutted” that the Red2 service to Cotgrave has to finish in September and feels he has let local people down.
The route went head-to-head with the established Trentbarton Cotgrave Connection and when launched last September, offered people a faster journey into Nottingham, a link to Victoria Centre and cheaper fares.
But a well-documented bus war broke out, with Trentbarton owners Wellglade also launching a new service called Bargain Bus and offering fares at just 50p a trip. This was later increased to £1 and now Premiere claim the long-term affects of this discounted pricing has meant they cannot continue.
Mr Greaves told The Local News: “We started with all the best intentions of providing bus users in Cotgrave a choice of operator, but with the Bargain Bus running just in front of us offering such a cheap fare, we too had to drop our prices to compete. We have gained plenty of loyal customers that I thank very much for their business but the fact is that the fare they are paying is just not covering the costs of running the service.
“One year on, we have lost so much money on the Red2 that I can no longer put the future of my business at risk by losing this money every day. We could put the fares up but would lose more customers than the extra revenue we would gain.
“If we were a big company with millions in the bank I would continue but as a small family business we have to cut our losses. It is with great regret that the Red2 has to finish and I just feel gutted and that I have let the Cotgrave people down.
“Our competitor has got what they have battled for – the monopoly has been restored and again they can charge whatever they want and run whenever they want. It cannot be right that one company can run two services – one cheap and one expensive, to squeeze the competition out. I know the Competition Commission and Office Of Fair Trading is currently investigating these types of situations.”
The last Red2 bus will run on Saturday 3rd September.

A school in Cotgrave has become one of the first in the country to be selected for an important new role aimed at further raising standards. The Cotgrave Candleby Lane School is one of only 100 schools in England to be granted teaching school status, which is a new designation entitling it to lead the training and professional development for staff.
Staff from the school will now be invited to the National College’s Learning and Conference Centre in Nottingham in September for a formal induction.
The milestone marks a shift towards school-centred training and development. Teaching schools will be responsible for leading a group of schools, working with other partners including at least one university, to deliver high quality support for teachers and leaders at all stages in their career.
The school’s head teacher, Chris Wheatley, said: “We are all so very excited to achieve this designation. For years, all in our school community have strived to make Cotgrave Candleby Lane a school in which the area can be proud.
“This status puts us at the leading edge of school improvement across the country and our aim is to make our school and strategic partners at the heart of school improvement and future educational direction. The teaching school model is very much about effective school collaborations.”
