Lots of people have questions about the Catholic Church. Why is the Pope so important? Why does Mary have such a role in the church? Why do Catholics have to go to confession?
Every year, starting in mid-September, the Parish of Corpus Christi in Clifton runs Thursday evening sessions to enable people who would like to know more about Catholicism to come and find out. There is no obligation to join the church or make any kind of commitment to it. The evenings are simply an opportunity to ask questions, find out more and dispel the myths.
The informal sessions are held at the Presbytery, usually hosted by the Parish Priest, Father Christopher Thomas, together with a couple of helpers, where aspects of the Catholic faith are discussed and explored. If you think this may be of interest to you, please write to Fr Chris at the address below and include your contact details.

The locals arrive for the opening of their medial centre.

Five Churches from Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, including one from Clifton, have seen their joint fundraising efforts come to fruition, with the opening of a medical centre in Takoradi in Ghana. The Angel Green Christian Fellowship is located at the Park Gate Centre in Barton Green and members of the congregation have played a huge part in the opening of such a valuable centre in Ghana.
The desperately needed medical centre was opened to the joy of the 14 villages that it will support. Some village members celebrated by dancing to drum music and the ceremony was attended by the local chief, the regional administrator and Ghanaian health officials, who will maintain the centre’s future.
Mike Phillips made the trip to Ghana and he revealed the feelings of those who were there. He told The Local News: “It was fantastic seeing so many people being treated immediately that the centre had opened. Hundreds of people were queuing and the medical staff were on hand taking blood pressure, testing for HIV, treating malaria and caring for pregnant women. It was an awesome sight and made all the hard work so worthwhile.”
The centre cost £70,000 to build and the four other churches that participated in raising money were Lifespring Church in New Ollerton, Sherwood Forest Community Church (SFCC), The Dales Christian Centre and Shirebrook Christian Centre.
Some churches sent members of their congregation to witness the opening of the medial centre, and also the ongoing progress at a nursery for 80 children that they had already assisted. Lifespring Church members delivered toys, health and safety lessons and education for the children.
Amongst other memorable moments, the church members visited a village on stilts, and also visited the amazing Canopy Walkway at the Kakuum National Park.
Vicky Price, who attends Lifespring Church said: “It was a very humbling experience. We saw the wealthy side of Ghana and the poverty side. We experienced both worlds, but wherever we went the people were fantastic. They certainly know how to welcome you.”
Having visited Cape Coast Castle (the seat of the slave trade), pastor Paul Johnson said: I feel a sense of huge delight that we have been able to give something special back to the people of Ghana.”
With the heartwarming success of this trip, the churches that support these schemes hope to continue their backing and are already planning their next visit.

Bingham and District Choral Society (B&DCS) have two dates for your diary. Their first concert this season will take place at St Mary’s Church in Radcliffe on Saturday 20th November at 7.30pm.
Tickets cost £9 (with accompanied children under-16 entering free). Tickets are on sale from the National Dry Cleaners in Radcliffe, Bingham Library, B&DCS members, and also from Sylvia on 01949 839 991.
This will be a Baroque Concert accompanied by the Bingham Concert Orchestra, conducted by Neville Ward, with two works by Mozart and The Mass in Time of War by Haydn.
The soloists will be Lisa Wilson (soprano), Caryl Hughes (mezzo-soprano), Christopher Lemming (tenor) and Njabulo Madlala (baritone). This is a late work by Haydn, in contrast to the Laurentine Litany written by a very youthful Mozart.
The other composition is his famous Horn Concerto No.3 in which the soloist is a local musician Robert Parker – lets hope nobody steals his horn!
Their Christmas Concert will take place on Saturday 18th December at 7.30pm in St Mary and All the Angels Parish Church, Bingham. The group are looking forward to hearing the voices of the Carnarvon School Choir, who will be joining them for this popular Carol Concert. For more details visit their website at binghamchoral.org.uk.

Edwalton Parish Church was founded in the 12th century and is an outstanding example in the Church of England’s long history. The upkeep of such a historic building is a challenging task and the latest need for Edwalton is the complete replacing of the main path from the lych gate to the south entrance, a distance of
some 60 metres.
A spokesperson for Edwalton Parish Church told The Local News: “The present path is in tarmaced and it has been seriously damaged by the roots of some of the fine ancient trees in the churchyard. It constitutes a hazard to church goers, especially the aged and infirm and those in wheelchairs, to say nothing of brides and coffin bearers.
“The path is now being re-laid with pathing slabs at a cost of £15,000. The Parochial Church Council has pledged £10,000 of this sum so we have a shortfall of £5,000. Parishioners have been asked to contribute to the scheme by “buying” slabs at £3 each and their generosity has so far produced £1,500. This work will greatly enhance the already welcoming atmosphere of this lovely place and readers are encouraged to come and see the beautiful church.”
Anybody wishing to donate should send their gifts to the vicar at Edwalton Parish Church, Village Street, Edwalton. NG12 4AB.
