Local judge Jeremy Lea undertook the Robin Hood Marathon in aid of West Bridgford’s children’s charity Faith in Families. Completing the half marathon in less than three hours, the Right Honourable runner has raised a substantial donation for the charity.
Judge Jeremy is a family court judge and has recently become the chair of trustees for Faith in Families. He trained for the marathon for several months and kept a blog of his eventful progress. You can read this online at facebook.com/FaithinFamiliesNotts.
Jeremy told The Local News: “It was absolutely exhausting but I feel delighted to have completed the run for Faith in Families. It’s great to be able to support a local charity and the great work they do in schools and with vulnerable children across the region.”
Faith in Families chief executive, Sumerjit Ram, and other members of staff were on hand to cheer Judge Jeremy on as he sped over the finishing line.
Mrs Ram said: “Our charity is absolutely thrilled to have the support of Jeremy Lea. Not only has he brought so much to Faith in Families in his role as chairman, he has also proven that he can rise to any challenge; climbing the three peaks may be next on our list.”

Children from the Playroom Nursery on Musters Road sprang into action to raise money for Sense, Britain’s leading charity for people who are both deaf and blind. The babies and young children, all under the age of four, joined together in a range of exciting activities to raise money for others which included a summer fayre and dressing up days.
Playroom owner, Helen Luddington, said: “We like to do something for charity every year because we feel it is good to show children at this age that they can do something to help others.
“All the children threw themselves into the fundraising and were delighted to receive a certificate from Sense for the £245 raised.
“It’s activities like this that makes me feel really proud of the children and our wonderful nursery and shows why Ofsted praised us earlier in the year.”

Over 800 participants took part in the ‘Highway Hobble’ along the A46 between Syerston and Farndon to raise money for the RAF Newton Memorial Fund. The fund was set up in May this year by local residents and was spearheaded by Bingham resident, Tim O’Brien.
Tim told The Local News: “I want to ensure that a permanent memorial is included in the next development phase of the former Royal Air Force Newton site, before the airfield disappears forever under housing.”
Tim took part in the event with his wife Julie and also their two children, George (5) and Niamh (3), and it was a poignant day for the toddlers.
“George and Niamh particularly wanted to remember their late great-grandfather, who was stationed at Newton in 1944. He was a fitter working on the engines of aircraft such as Airspeed Oxfords and Avro Ansons.
“The plan is to recycle the former main gates to the airfield into a design which will also incorporate the use of public art. One idea is a large metal sculpture of a Polish eagle to represent the strong Polish connection.
“We would also like numerous squadron badges and information panels to teach Newton’s story to present and future generations.”
The O’Brien raised nearly £600 in pledged sponsorship from their hobble towards the current appeal target of £25,000. The family of four were part of 800 participants in the run/walk organised by Balfour Beatty. Registration fees for the walk were donated to the Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance which flew overhead, while BBC East Midlands TV weather presenter Sara Blizzard saw everyone off. To learn more about the proposed memorial, please view the fund’s website at rafnewtonmemorialfund.yolasite.com.

The Rotary Club of West Bridgford has donated £250 to Nottingham Hospitals Charity to support cystic fibrosis patients at the City Hospital. Cystic fibrosis is the UK’s most common life-threatening inherited disease, with one in 25 people carrying the gene. The current average age of survival is 36 years and there is currently no cure.
The money donated by the rotary club will be used to support cystic fibrosis patients from across the county and East Midlands, who are treated at the City Hospital. Nottingham Hospitals Charity exists to enhance patient care at the Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH), NHS Trust’s Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital campuses. Donations to the charity are used to benefit patients at NUH by providing added extras, such as specialist equipment, medical research and staff development programmes.

Over the last few weeks, local choir BeVox has been out and about raising money for good causes. After staging ‘A Real Variety Performance’ at the Becket School in West Bridgford, alongside several events in other areas, the singers have raised over £2,100 for several charities, including Treetops Hospice.
Choir director, Timothy Allen, said: “It’s great to be able to give something back. We often perform in the local community, which can raise people’s spirits, but making a financial contribution to the running of local charities does so much more than that.”
Local singers have travelled widely with the choir, taking part in everything from large-scale flash mobs in London’s St Pancras, a sound-and-light extravaganza at Rotherham’s Magna, to informal performances in the reception areas of hospitals.
Singers also get involved in organising the events – one group singer arranging for the choir to travel down to Hemel Hempstead to sing for residents at her grandmother’s retirement home.
Plans are already afoot for a whole host of events in the choir’s next season. They are always looking for local people who enjoy singing to come and get involved. There are no auditions to take part, no requirement to read music – and every member has a voice in the choice of songs that are sung.
Music for the autumn season includes everything from Gershwin to The Monkees, from Karl Jenkins to Russell Watson. To find out more visit the website at bevox.co.uk or call 01226 712 173.

Crossdale Primary School in Keyworth has been staging the Crossdale 10k trail race and the 2k charity fun run since 1999.
