Local Brownies recently paid a visit to a West Bridgford dentist to find out more about what goes on behind the scenes.
Dr Kamal Singh Missan, from the Hilton Dental Clinic, said: “We discussed how to keep teeth healthy through good oral hygiene and a good diet, as well as the importance of cross infection control.
“We then allowed them to play dentist, nurse and patient in my surgery, where I explained a little bit more about the role of the dentist and the dental nurse and what we do. They had a lot of fun doing this.
“As a practice we do have an NHS contract for children and we are currently accepting new child patients, who will receive free dentistry up to the age of 18 years.”

Amidst a sea of flashing bunny ears, Girlguiding UK’s centenary year drew to a close last month with a gathering in the city’s Old Market Square involving over 4,000 members of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire, about half of the total membership in the county. After a showcase of local Guiding talent, the climax of the event came with the renewal of promises at 8.10pm (i.e. at 20:10 on 20/10/2010), led by chief guide, Liz Burnley, via a nation-wide live link-up.
Involving Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers and Senior Section members, plus leaders, supporters and adult volunteers from all over the county, the evening was introduced by Trent FM’s Emma Caldwell and started with the audience joining in an energetic dance warm-up led by Amy Godsmark.
Then came some very sparkling performances from Nottinghamshire Guiding’s Got Talent winners, including The Six Strummers from the 1st East Bridgford Guide Unit with ‘A Little Bit of Peace’ and Candice Curnow-Newland of the 1st Wollaton Unit, who performed ‘Somewhere’.
The 1st Burton Joyce Guide Unit’s baton-twirling Candy Girls also performed, as did Emily Hodkinson of the 1st Woodthorpe Unit with her version of ‘Wishing’ and 10-year-old Lucy Slater of the 4th Bingham Brownies singing ‘Any Dream Will Do’, with vocal backing from 1st Kinoulton Guides. Rosanna Smith O’Brien, 15, then sang ‘Sweet Child O’ Mine’ and led the crowd through ‘Happy Birthday to Guiding’, before local boy band Hit Parade were cheered to the stage.
As the magic 20:10 20/10/2010 approached, a hush fell on the square.
The national link-up with the first Young Women’s World Forum in Oxford went ‘live’ on schedule, and the 4,000 members of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire gathered in the Old Market Square were able to join with half a million Guiding members across the UK as they reaffirmed their commitment to Guiding, led by Liz Burnley.
The Young Women’s World Forum is the first in a series of forums, which bring together members of WAGGGS – the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts – to discuss and take action on the UN’s eight Millennium Development Goals. It is one of a number of long-term projects which Girlguiding UK has initiated as part of its centenary celebrations during 2010.
Girlguiding Nottinghamshire County Commissioner, Dee Miles, told The Local News: “In Nottinghamshire, every one of our 9,000 members has experienced a year to remember.
“From sailing tall ships to planting trees and flowerbeds, from walking the Robin Hood Way to supporting people in remote parts of the world, from braving their first sleepover to enjoying the excitement of a large camp, our girls – and our adults too – have relished the opportunities and challenges presented to them as members of the international Guiding family.
“But this doesn’t stop with the Centenary year. We welcome enquiries from anyone wanting to help Nottinghamshire girls and young women continue to make the most of life through Guiding.”
Enquiries about membership and volunteering opportunities with Girlguiding Nottinghamshire should be directed to county headquarters by telephoning 0115 987 7220.

Brownies all over the country will be celebrating 100 years of Girl Guiding in 2010, but the girls of the 1st Radcliffe-on-Trent unit will not be joining in the fun as the unit will close its doors on 14th December for the last time.
Guiders in the village have tried to put together a rescue package to save the unit, which has been running for over 50 years, but without success. Appeals for new adult leaders have had no response.
Brownies is ever-popular and there is no shortage of girls aged 7-10 wanting to be Brownies in the village, but the remaining two units cannot accommodate them all. If anyone reading this article may be able to help in any way please contact Marion on 0115 841 8046 or Gill on 0115 933 2683 for more information as soon as possible.
