The annual youth festival in West Bridgford clocked up its biggest attendance since Bridgfest became a regular event on the summer calendar. Out of the 1,200 plus young people who went along to the day of free music, sport and fun, 700 of those also signed up to a charter of non-violence, condemning the recent spate of anti-social behaviour demonstrated by a small number of people in some of Britain’s cities.
Nottinghamshire County Council leader, Kay Cutts, who spent the afternoon joining in activities and chatting to youngsters, said: “Young people often get a raw deal in the press and with older generations, who perceive them to be troublemakers and up to no good, but the reality is that this is only a very small minority.
“Most of the young people were also keen to sign up to the charter to show their public condemnation of the recent violence across the country, which shows the strength of feeling that exists among the younger generation.”
Supt Paul Anderson of Nottinghamshire Police added: “It was great to see such a large group of young people coming together to enjoy the event. In light of what happened recently, we are really pleased Bridgfest went ahead and all those who attended
behaved impeccably.”
Twelve rock and pop youth bands from the Rushcliffe area performed on the main stage and the urban marquee hosted MCing, DJing, street dance and poetry. The fun activities on offer, including body zorbs, sumo wrestling with inflatable suits, graffiti art and circus skills, were mainly aimed at young people between 10 and 19, but children from five are also catered for.
Council youth worker David Warren, who was one of the event organisers, added: “Bridgfest was a huge success this year. The feedback I got was that people really enjoyed it telling me that there was not only a lot to do, but a good variety of activities to suit everyone.”

By Lorraine Pulford
The plans for the Summer Meadow are slowly coming to fruition. We have planned this for
a colourful scene and to attract, butterflies and insects to create more biodversity. Rushcliffe Borough Council ground staff have prepared the ground and Friends of Bridgford Park are currently discussing quotes for rotorvation of the land, as a private contractor is needed. Once this is done, the area will be fenced off to keep the ground ready and for public safety.
After discussion with Notts Wildlife Trust, who have donated two sacks of seeds, it was decided that the area should not be seeded now until September, so a further application of weed killer may be needed. The friends would like any members of the public to join in with the seeding, as we think the children especially, would have fun with this. For more details please call Linda on 0115 981 9146 or Lorraine on 0115 981 6646.

The Friends of Bridgford Park has been running since 2007 and has already made a considerable impact working together with Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Streetwise team. The Willow Tunnel has proved very popular with the youngsters, as well as the small woodland area nearby with paths laid, bulb planting and nest boxes for birds and insects.
The wooded area along Albert Road has also had some preliminary work carried out and the hedge gaps have also been re-enforced. The current project is to site more bird boxes to encourage more birds and there is already a woodpecker in residence in the park. Wildlife is very important to an urban area and
another possible project is to encourage bees. For further information, or if you think you can help out, call Linda on 0115 981 9146 or Lorraine on 0115 981 6646.

Special guests for the evening were the Radcliffe-based Bridge Singers, led by Lynne Holland.
Despite looming thunder clouds and the occasional splash of rain, an audience of some 2,000 people revelled in a programme of British-themed light classics and Proms-night favourites. All were performed with polish and enthusiasm by the 50-strong band under the baton of conductor and music director, Robert Parker, who steered the proceedings from an impressive new podium, bought by the band thanks to a grant from the East Midlands Airport Community Fund.
Organised by the Community Arts and Events team at Rushcliffe Borough Council, the Rushcliffe ‘Proms in the Park’ has become a regular fixture in the community calendar. The band was welcomed this year by the Mayor of Rushcliffe, Councillor Marie Males, and supported by vocalist Sarah Simmonds and the Bohemia Ukulele Band.
For information on Nottingham Concert Band performances or to enquire about membership, please telephone Jeff Fry on 0115 923 5652, send an email to music@nottinghamconcertband.org or visit the website nottinghamconcertband.org

The date of Saturday 30th January has been declared for the next Action Day.
Paths will be laid, brush will be tidied and many bulbs and trees will be planted. This will brighten up the woodland area next to Albert Road.
The Group Chair, Linda Philips, said “This is our second Action Day which is part of the Building Safer Communities project funded by Nottinghamshire County Council. I am excited to see what a difference Voluntary Action can make, especially when coupled with the help of Rushcliffe Borough Council staff.
“Everyone is welcome to come and help. We are hoping families with children will join us again in making our park even more beautiful.
“We also aim to create a welcoming environment for birds, bats and other wildlife.
Additionally thanks go to Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust for their valuable advice and continual support.”
For further details please contact Linda on 0115 981 9146 or Lorraine on 0115 981 6646.
