Personally, I won’t believe it until the diggers arrive but it is a step in the right direction. I would like to thank your paper for constantly featuring this project.
I know you have always published comments from both sides of the argument but that focus has kept the subject alive and in the public eye. Thank you very much and may I wish you a happy new year.

Road users will benefit from safer and smoother driving conditions as a result of forthcoming resurfacing and renewal works on the A453 between junction 24 of the M1 and the Crusader Island in Clifton. The works will involve the resurfacing of the A453 and the renewal of road markings and studs.
Work will start this month and finish in February. All work will take place at night to reduce disruption for road users and diversion routes will be clearly signposted.
Highways Agency project manager, Len Murray, said: “Once the work is complete, road users will benefit from a much improved road surface. We are working closely with the local authorities and transport providers, and we have planned the works carefully in order to keep disruption to the minimum.
“We will endeavour to complete the work as quickly and efficiently as possible, and we are carrying it out overnight to reduce the impact on road users.”
For more information about the works, people can contact the Highways Agency information line on 0300 123 500 or visit the scheme webpage at highways.gov.uk/A453resurfacing.

Local businesses are being urged to back a bid by Nottinghamshire County Council which it hopes will help bring forward the widening of the A453. The County Council has already written to transport secretary, Philip Hammond, pledging £20 million towards the cost of widening the route.
Councillor Kay Cutts, leader of the County Council, has now written to major businesses in the region, urging them to support the bid.
She said: “The importance of improving the A453 to Nottinghamshire and the regional economy cannot be underestimated. That is why Nottinghamshire County Council has offered £20 million towards the cost of widening this vital route in the hope that the Government will bring forward its approval.
“But in order to maximise our chance of success we need to gather pledges of support from as many local businesses as possible.”
The A453 is one of the most congested roads in the country and costs larger businesses as much as £100,000 a year because of increased fuel usage, lack of access to customers, abandoned journeys and accident costs. To the region as a whole, it has been estimated that an improved A453 would bring a boost to the economy of £540m.
The widening of the A453 is believed to be one of just a few reserve schemes on a government shortlist to be brought forward for construction to begin before 2015. Latest cost estimates for the scheme are just over £160 million.

The long-running saga of the potential dualling of the A453 could be set to be coming to an end after Nottinghamshire County Council took the unusual step of offering a £20 million contribution to the Government to bring forward the scheme to widen the road. After coming into power, the Collation put plans on hold to turn the road into a dual carriageway, as part of their money saving implementations.
The road, which runs through the edge of Clifton and links the south of Nottingham with the M1, has been a top priority for improvement in the East Midlands for many years. The Nottinghamshire section of the road is the second most congested part of the national road network after a short section of the M25. It also has a poor safety record and high volumes of traffic.
Nottinghamshire County Council leader, Kay Cutts, said: “The A453 is the weakest link in the regional road network and the road, in its current state, is severely limiting the economic recovery and development of the area.
“Its widening is fundamental to unlocking the huge economic potential of our vibrant county. We already know that the traffic delays encountered, especially by businesses, are having a detrimental effect upon inward investment.”
It is forecast that up to 30,000 vehicles a day will travel along the route by 2027, making congestion even worse. The proposed scheme would have the capacity to safely handle this increase in numbers and attract traffic back to the A453, reducing the volume of traffic on a number of local roads. It will also improve access to East Midlands Parkway station.
In the five years up to October 2010, there were 185 accidents involving personal injury on just the Nottinghamshire part of the A453.
Following last autumn’s spending review, the A453 scheme was put on hold, along with 13 other schemes across the country, where no decision to go ahead is expected until at least 2015, after the next General Election. But since then the Department for Transport has indicated it would like to identify a small number of reserve schemes where construction could potentially start earlier if circumstances allowed.
Councillor Cutts added: “Nottinghamshire County Council is keen to do everything in its power to expedite this situation. Our contribution would be raised through borrowing and repaid over a number of years because of the challenging budgetary pressures we’re currently facing.
“This is a major financial decision for us and we don’t underestimate the significance of this offer at a time of much-needed capital support for our schools, libraries, youth centres and older people’s facilities.”
The scheme to dual the road has already been subject to a public inquiry and is one of only a few nationally which would effectively be ready to go, placing it in a strong position to be one of the accelerated reserve schemes. A decision from the Government as to whether any of the reserve schemes will be accelerated for early construction is expected this year.
Shoppers at the ‘Top Shops’ in Clifton had mixed views on the latest hopes that the road will finally be turned into dual-carriageway.
Dave said: “I think this is great news and long overdue. It is good to see the Council doing something about a big problem.”
Val added: “Finally there seems to be light at the end of the tunnel. All those hours wasted queuing to get back to my house will be a thing of the past.”
But some residents were not so keen. Geoff told The Local News: “I have to be honest and say I am disappointed. I thought we may have seen the last of this with the Government cuts. Some people in Clifton may think it is great but the people living opposite the road will be horrified. Houses will have to go, gardens will be cut down and that lovely green area with trees will be lost, very sad.”

During the work, the 6.1 mile section of the A453 was closed in both directions. Work on the £440,000 scheme was carried out by Colas, USL, Prismo and Aone+ on behalf of the Highways Agency.
Highways Agency project manager, Mark Braithwaite, said: “We plan all of our works carefully to minimise disruption as much as possible to road users while delivering a safe scheme at the best value for money to the taxpayer.
“In this instance, we felt that a complete road closure was vital to carry out this essential work safely, as well as enabling us to get it done as quickly as possible.”
The A453 was earmarked to be dualled this year but Government cutbacks have seen the project put on hold for the time being, with no start date for at least another four years.
John from Clifon said: “I use the A453 every day and it is still a nightmare. The closure did not affect me but I could probably have half my life back if I counted up the hours I spend sat in traffic on the road.
“I realise the Government have to save money in many areas but it makes no sense to press ahead with the tram but not bother widening the main route into Nottingham from the south.”

The A453 widening was almost ready to go when Labour came into office in 1997. One of the first things they did was to cancel the programme. Thirteen years later the Tories get into power and the same thing happens once again.
Yet it looks as if the stupid ‘white elephant’ tram extension is going ahead at double the cost of the A453 widening programme. What are our politicians thinking of?
It is a load of nonsense. Nottingham must be the only major city in the country with a motorway link that’s single carriageway (don’t mention junctions 25 and 26 – like some of your readers have).
They (the politicians) might have had the grace and sense to await the result of the public enquiry. Forty years we have been waiting for this and now it looks like we shall have to wait a long while longer. I am absolutely disgusted.
Work on the £194m project to widen the A453 was due to start in the autumn, but new chancellor George Osborne has said plans will be deferred indefinitely.

With the formation of a new government, it perhaps may bring to an end crazy plans for Clifton. The (not needed) tram may be derailed, if you pardon the pun. This new government has already said it has to save billions of pounds and I am sure this would be top of their list. A project that is just a waste of money for a form of transport that nobody cares about.
Then there’s the dualling of the A453 which would destroy Clifton and cut some beautiful surrounding areas in half. I notice from other press reports this could also be scrapped and good riddance.
There’s finally a government that can see sense rather than throwing money around to daft projects that really aren’t needed.
All that will happen after widening is that you reach the end of the queue for the motorway island much quicker than you did before, or get stuck in Clifton in record time. A great achievement from a multi-million pound exercise.

I don’t understand why people want to see the A453 turned into a dual-carriageway, especially people who live in Clifton. It is already a monster of a road with trucks, coaches and thousands of cars travelling on it every week, so why make it worse?

At least now with it being a single lane road, some of the bigger lorries tend to avoid it.
