NO SURPRISE ON A453 SETBACK

The A453 widening was almost ready to go when Labour came into office in 1997. One of the first things they did was to cancel the programme. Thirteen years later the Tories get into power and the same thing happens once again.
Yet it looks as if the stupid ‘white elephant’ tram extension is going ahead at double the cost of the A453 widening programme. What are our politicians thinking of?
It is a load of nonsense. Nottingham must be the only major city in the country with a motorway link that’s single carriageway (don’t mention junctions 25 and 26 – like some of your readers have).
They (the politicians) might have had the grace and sense to await the result of the public enquiry. Forty years we have been waiting for this and now it looks like we shall have to wait a long while longer. I am absolutely disgusted.

A453 WIDENING PLANS ON HOLD

Plans to widen the link between the south of Nottingham with junction 24 of the M1 have been put on hold, as part of government plans to save £6.2 billion. Work on the £194m project to widen the A453 was due to start in the autumn, but new chancellor George Osborne has said plans will be deferred indefinitely. The widening of the current single lane road, which would have seen up to eight lanes in some parts, has been discussed for more than a decade. An inquiry into the plans has already been held and a final decision was expected very shortly.

GOVERNMENT COULD HALT PLANS

With the formation of a new government, it perhaps may bring to an end crazy plans for Clifton. The (not needed) tram may be derailed, if you pardon the pun. This new government has already said it has to save billions of pounds and I am sure this would be top of their list. A project that is just a waste of money for a form of transport that nobody cares about.
Then there’s the dualling of the A453 which would destroy Clifton and cut some beautiful surrounding areas in half. I notice from other press reports this could also be scrapped and good riddance.
There’s finally a government that can see sense rather than throwing money around to daft projects that really aren’t needed.

WIDENING WILL NOT HELP A453

I agree that there is a problem with the A453, but what do you think that widening it will help? The problem isn’t that the road is not dual carriageway, it’s that the traffic can’t leave the road at it’s ends.
All that will happen after widening is that you reach the end of the queue for the motorway island much quicker than you did before, or get stuck in Clifton in record time. A great achievement from a multi-million pound exercise.

I don’t understand why people want to see the A453 turned into a dual-carriageway, especially people who live in Clifton. It is already a monster of a road with trucks, coaches and thousands of cars travelling on it every week, so why make it worse?

At least now with it being a single lane road, some of the bigger lorries tend to avoid it.

CAN’T WAIT FOR A453 WIDENING

I read the letter in your paper from G. Snell (Local News – October) about the widening of the A453. I drive that road every day as I work for a local bus company and do the East Midlands Airport run.
I can’t wait till it’s been done. It usually takes 50 minutes to get to the airport, but with the amount of traffic using the A453, it can sometimes take us anywhere between 90 to 160 minutes.
As for improving public transport, what does this person want? There are several buses for Clifton that run every eight to ten minutes and we run late due to traffic congestion and traffic accidents.
