Plumtree restaurant Perkins has been named as a ‘Front Runner’ in the 2013 Good Food Guide Readers’ Restaurant of the Year Award. Family-run Perkins, whose menu champions local produce and regularly features dishes from their dedicated smokehouse, is one of 40 UK restaurants named among The Good Food Guide’s national front runners. The modern, stylish restaurant is one of just four competing for the Midlands regional crown. Set within
a lovingly-restored Victorian railway station, it would be a third success for Perkins. The restaurant was named Midlands Restaurant of the Year in 2008 and 2009.
Perkins co-owner, Jon Perkins, said:?“It is wonderful to be named amongst readers’ top 40 UK restaurants and a massive boost to everyone here at Perkins. Our committed service team deserve a massive pat on the back. Having readers consider us among the Midlands’ top four restaurants is a nod to the incredible suppliers who continue to provide Perkins with brilliant seasonal ingredients.”
Current locally-sourced highlights on the Perkins menu include tomato, shallot and basil tart tartin with olive salad, honey and mustard dressing; roast rump of organic lamb and mini shepherd’s pie with parmesan mashed potato and fine beans; and pork fillet, black pudding and cheek fritters with creamed potato, sautéed cabbage, smoked bacon, peas and Dijon Hollandaise sauce.
The Good Food Guide Readers’ Restaurant of the Year competition gives diners the opportunity to have their say by nominating a favourite local establishment across 10 UK regions. The award celebrates local eateries and recognises great food and service across the UK. The 10 regional winners will be announced this month and the overall winner of GFG Readers’ Restaurant of the Year will be announced at an awards ceremony in June.

The Sanctuary Bar & Restaurant in Upper Saxondale joined up with Nottingham Rugby to host
a Steak Night with the opportunity to meet the players and coaching team. All of the squad, along with the coaching and management team, attended the event and mixed with Sanctuary regulars and rugby fans. They enjoyed delicious Longhorn steaks, something The Sanctuary is now famous for. The steaks are locally sourced and dry aged for a minimum of 21 days for a more rounded, complex and tastier flavour.
The rise of the Green and Whites under head coach Martin Haag this season has the seen them book a play-off semi-final berth for the first time in history. Their recent victory over the Cornish Pirates guaranteed Nottingham Rugby second place in the RFU Championship and their highest finish since relegation from the top flight in 1992.

Wyldecrest Parks, one of the largest residential park home companies in the United Kingdom, have been given a top management certificate. The company, who have a park in Radcliffe, are the first mobile home business on the Lloyd’s register of quality-assured businesses. To achieve the certificate of approval called ISO 9001, Wyldecrest’s management systems and procedures have been tested over several months and given a seal of approval.
Wyldecrest chairman, Alfie Best, said: “This is a giant step forward for the company and our customers, but it doesn’t stop here. It’s a evolutionary process and we need to maintain and improve upon the high standards we are already setting.”
The ISO 9001 is designed to help organisations ensure they meet the needs of their customers and for them to comply with statutory and regulatory requirements.
Matthew George, financial controller, added:?“This is a great feather in our cap and the first time a park home company has been placed on the Lloyd’s register of quality-assured companies. It’s taken several months to achieve but we now have been given the official seal of approval. It means we are a forward-thinking company and have met an international standard for managing the systems and processes in the company. Implementing ISO will make us a more efficient and effective organisation, increase our customer satisfaction, enhance our marketing and reduce waste, while also increasing productivity.”

The 140 children of Willow Brook Primary School in Keyworth raised a staggering £2,850 for Comic Relief. Each of the five classes thought of a 30-minute challenge which they could be sponsored for. Reception choose a non-stop ‘Wake and Shake’ session, while Class 2 opted for continuous laps around the playground on their bikes. Class 4 sang the Comic Relief song over and over, Class 5 completed a relay challenge around the field and Class 6 saw how many Maltesers they could get in a bowl using straws. Headteacher, Ly Toom, told The?Local?News:?“It was an amazing achievement. Well done to the Willow Brook children, families and staff for putting their all into fundraising for such an excellent cause.”
As an added incentive, the class who raised the most money could select a treat of their choice. Class 2 raised £722 and will soon be having a pyjama day.

The second Fine Foods and Local Crafts Fair will be held at the Old School, Fern Road in Cropwell Bishop on Sunday 7th July from 10am to 3pm. The event is part of the Cropwell Bishop Celebration Weekend and has been organised by Barbara Pugh, who is renowned for Mrs Pugh’s Preserves jams, marmalades, chutneys and pickles.
She has gathered together an eclectic mix of stalls offering food, home and gardenware, fashion and personal products and even some pocket money stalls that will tempt the children. Many of the stallholders are local to the area and the majority of the produce is handcrafted by them. There will also be plenty of refreshments, ice creams, lunches and teas available, as well as a tombola and raffle with plenty of special prizes. Entertainment will be provided throughout the event by Persiflage Saxophone Quartet, also local to the area. At midday there will be Teddy Bear Parachute Jumping from the tower of the nearby St Giles Church. Visitors to the fair are encouraged to bring their teddy and homemade parachute to join in the fun.
This is a fundraising event for the Nottingham Breast Institute at the City Hospital. Joan Charlett, who is helping to organise the event, has already raised £33,000 towards research and the purchase of equipment for Oncoplastic Reconstructive Breast Surgery at the Breast Institute, through baking and selling cakes and desserts, as well as taking part in several fundraising activities. This event will help to raise funds for the purchase of a 3D camera that will enable patients about to undergo reconstructive breast surgery, following a mastectomy, to perceive their possible post-surgery body image.

Our third exhibition at Cotgrave Miners Welfare was again a success. Make a note in the your diaries now that 12th and 13th April 2014 will be our fourth year at the same venue. Visitors enjoyed seeing the layouts in varying scales and seeing and buying the offers at the trade stands, including the stand of our long-term sponsor, Bill Mossop. Congratulations to Stan Clough and his group who organised it all.
Two of the layouts were created by Bingham Model Railway Club (BMRC) members. Chris Trafford’s work in progress ‘South Town’ is based on one of Yarmouth’s three terminal stations. Trevor Webster’s ‘Stamford East’ has been exhibited many times too much acclaim.
All the buildings were scratch built to match the originals. He was just beaten into second place by the public vote for ‘Best in Show’.
This was won by Alan Britton of Mansfield with ‘Nunbrook and Loxley’, which shown to the public for the first time last August. Another thing of note was that Maurice Boddy visited us from York for the third year running. Maurice had the unenviable task in 1965 of telling me what to do on BR’s computers and making sure I did as I was told.
Maurice also wrote 17 volumes of RCTS ‘Locos of the LNER’ between 1963 and 1977. Another three volumes were published from 1988 to 1994. Last year, Maurice complained to Les Richardson about a shortage of his favourite locos, A3s and A4s, so Les was better prepared this time.
