I read many comments in last month’s Local News about the lack of support for a Sainsbury’s supermarket on Wilford Lane. The Asda is the only big supermarket this side of Bridgford. Other supermarkets near-by, such as Co-Op (also on Wilford Lane), just don’t have the range of products to appease the local shopper – well that’s my opinion anyway.
Increased choice will surely bring more competitive prices. I currently shop at the Castle Marina Sainsbury’s and would be delighted to have one closer to home.
It seems to me it is a case of the NIMBYs again – I will happily see one built but not in my back yard!
For the past few weeks there have been low-flying noisy aeroplanes at all hours of the day, but especially in the evening from 8-11pm. They seem to be mostly heading east from East Midlands Airport (EMA). It is getting to be a real nuisance and speaking to EMA only gets a photocopied circular saying “we monitored it and no rules were broken”.
Unimproved, I can visualise many future incidents, and accidents, especially for motorists unfamiliar with the local roads. Let us hope that the finalised lane markings are clear and distinctive.

The amount of cars now parking partway on the footpaths has gone beyond a joke. I was tempted to take pictures after seeing a chap in a wheelchair have to go onto the road to get by a car parked on the footpath opposite the British Legion.
What we need is a full-time parking enforcement warden here in Clifton. What goes through the minds of these ignorant folks as they mount the kerb to park? If the council are reading this, feel free to contact me to fill the job. I counted nine cars parked on double yellow lines part on the footpath and only three with disabled badges (I would have thought the badge holders would have more consideration). Some of them parked for over two hours. Get some respect drivers.

I’ve had one of the Sainsbury’s pamphlets. Clever piece of work this is – extolling the virtues of the eco-dream store on stilts for Wilford Lane. They say the increase in traffic will be manageable. Ha! Like you could manage the fall out from a small nuclear device. The proposed new store will probably light up the sky like one. There is a benefit though. It will be that bright, because it’s way up there
with the street lighting, we won’t need to switch on our house lights – just leave the curtains open.
Sainsbury’s researchers will have worked out what the kids from the school will spend and how many people will get off the tram to shop, and how many will come by car. They say it will be walkable for most, being so close, just like walking to the Co-op at Wilford, Asda in West Bridgford or Tesco at Compton Acres
There’s Morrisons at Gamston or Clifton, just a bit more than a walk I’ll give you that.
There’s Marks and Sparks in West Bridgford for a treat, Co-Op in West Bridgford (an old favourite) and Iceland. Or we can go into town and push the boat out at Waitrose? And how far is Sainsbury’s at Castle Marina? How many small retailers, I wonder, are within easy reach?
We better get use to seeing less of these in the years ahead. It’s a sad thought that the only local space left without some sort of superstore on it will be the River Trent. Don’t mention a floating Sainsbury’s for goodness sake. This is a Wilford resident who says NO to Sainsbury’s Wilford Lane

I have just read that Sainsbury’s have revealed plans to redevelop a site formerly occupied by The Chateau pub, off Wilford Lane in West Bridgford. Now that will get me shopping down there, as the proposed extension of Morrisons has been put on hold.
The state of staffing levels in Morrisons has got folks waiting in the aisles, getting back to the old Co-op way of working again. A new supermarket will shake them up a bit I reckon.
The old habits of mislabelling and lack of stock has been putting off shoppers for a long time. A new store just down the road will get my shopping money until Morrisons lift their game. Eyes down and look in!

I hear that the proposed remodelling and expansion of Morrisons has been put on hold for a while, while plans for a drive-through restaurant on the old Man of Trent site has had a knock back. This is not good for us here in Clifton, as we are bottom of the league when it come to retail outlets. It seems like we just tread water with what we have.
The building plot on Green Lane would make a good addition to the shopping here in Clifton. Sadly my pocket money puts me with no chance of buying it up.
Note to the council…now that I own a motor scooter, can you spend my taxes on repairing Southchurch Drive? It is a patchwork of potholes and loose manhole covers (I think the politically correct term is Inspection hole covers). It is not one of the best rides. Oh and can you retarmac the path outside my house, as you stopped work last year leaving me and my neighbour with uneven footpaths.
