YOUTH
PROJECT CAN HELP I was heartened
by J. Acres final comment (Local News - February) that we must
reach out to the young people they are our future and we need
to make sure they are looked after. A group of residents in
Radcliffe is forming a charity that we hope will do just that.
The Radcliffe-on-Trent Community Youth Project is an
initiative by Christians Together that comprises two closely
related and overlapping arms - one based on the establishment
of premises in the village that can be used by the young
people and the other on the appointment of a full-time,
qualified Christian Youth Worker.
The premises will give the Under 18’s the opportunity to sit
and chat in a safe, warm and inviting environment and take
part in activities of their own choosing. The Christian Youth
Worker will work towards the spiritual development of young
people in Radcliffe, by developing and forging new links with
young people where they are in the community as well as by
working with and alongside the established youth leaders in
the churches.
Our hope is that, with support from the Parish, Borough and
County Councils, the schools, the police, the churches and the
whole community, the project may address some of the issues
affecting young people in Radcliffe to the benefit of the
whole village. Malcolm Anderson
THERE IS PLENTY OF GOOD I have read
numerous of letters in The Local News complaining about the
behaviour of young people. I think it’s about time they were
given some credit. Sure there are the odd few who give others
a bad name but there are so many others doing such great
things. My Grandson is in the cubs and he’s forever raising
money for charity and getting involved in activities. One of
which is regularly looking after old people and taking them to
the shops. These sorts of things don’t get a mention and of
course there are similar kids helping out across the area and
indeed the country. Look at the young people serving in the
Armed Forces - we should be very proud of them. They put their
life on the line to make the world a better place. I just
thought it was about time the younger generation were given
some credit. John Griffiths
SO LUCKY LUCKY LUCKY To the people
who are making bad comments about West Bridgford you don’t
know how lucky you are. You have such a beautiful managed
place where the council care about faculties for the kids and
also the look of the area. This in return makes the people a
feel good and proud. Nottingham City Council need to take a
leave out of Rushcliffe’s book. Mr Russell
COUNCIL TAX RISES Well well well -
my new Council Tax bill came through the door and yet another
increase. We always hear about how the council is improving
and we are getting better value for our money but I don’t see
it at all. The binmen collect our rubbish and then dumps our
bins anywhere they like. The streets around where I live are
full of pot holes and are an accident waiting to happen. I
ring the council and no one picks up the phone and if they do
they are just rude and unhelpful. Then there’s the Police cost
rises. They don’t seem interested anymore about crime in the
area. Tell them you’ve been robbed and they don’t seem to
care. It seems as though all they want to know is where the
next shooting is going to be. I heard about someone being
robbed locally and it took the Police three days to get a
statement when they finally sent someone round to see the poor
victim. I see plans for the great ‘hub’ for Bridgford. Once
again the money is ploughed into West Bridgford and not
anywhere else. The have a perfectly good library already and
the Borough Council and County Council offices are on their
doorstep. Sometimes it seems the local councils don’t care
about anyone further a field of Gamston and Edwalton. I would
like to be probed wrong! J Harris
SHOCK AT CALL CHARGES I was astonished
to discover that to telephone the doctors surgery we have to
use an 0844 number, which I am told costs us 40p per minute.
Once a call is accepted you have to listen to a message,
followed by many
options, e.g. press 1 for Cotgrave, 2 for Bingham, and so on.
After a considerable length of time you are put through to the
surgery you require, and once again have to listen to several
options. If the operator at the surgery is busy you are left
holding on. All this can cost the caller 40-80p plus to make
an appointment. We are told that Doctors are on a very high
salary. I ask them, is it necessary to squeeze extra money out
of their patients? Many have paid into the N.H.S. all their
lives, believing they were to have a free N.H.S. What a con!
We pay for glasses, teeth, and now we even have to pay to make
a Doctor's appointment. Disgruntled Patient OLYMPIC DELIGHT It’s great to
see local venues in the running to be part of the 2012
Olympics. It would’ve been great to see the real event here in
Rushcliffe, maybe rowing or canoeing at Holme Pierrepont. But
even having training camps here will raise the city’s profile.
Hundreds of competitors from around the world will come to the
area which will be great to see. R. Richardson
FLASHING SIGNS NEEDED With regard to a letter from
Jeff Hickling (Local News - March) I really agree with the
suggestion that the flashing signs would be an answer to cars
coming along Shelford Road at speed. In respect of Peter J
Mason (Local News - March) he is typical of the ‘Heavy
Reflector Yellow Coat Attitude’ that appears to happen as soon
as they stand at the side of the road. It does not slow
traffic down but has the reverse effect. It is the aggressive
way the speed guns are pointed at you, even if you are keeping
to the 30mph speed limit. It would appear to me, further
training is required if we are to put up with these people who
think they are going to control you with their actions. This
is not their job but should be performed by the Police. Why
did they not put in the signs referred to above, instead of
wasting money on the pavement outside The Grange? SM

CLEAN THE STREETS I have noticed living in
Radcliffe for the last 25 years how dirty the village looks
especially on a Sunday Morning. I think that the council
should get somebody out to clean the streets of all the mess. Mark Mugaseth

SPEEDING HAS TO STOP BEFORE SOMEONE IS HURT I refer to Peter Mason’s recent
letter (Local News - March). He is a member of the Radcliffe
Community Speedwatch who have to be applauded for volunteering
to do this important job. In his letter he explained that one
speeding driver who was stopped recently said: “I don’t know
why you are bothering, nobody has been killed through speeding
in Radcliffe yet.” He may be right but our family has had four
cats mown down and killed by these inconsiderate, selfish
individuals over a seven year period. I have seen drivers
speeding into and out of the village and it is only a matter
of time before someone is killed by one of these poor excuses
for a driver. Mr. Jones Radcliffe-on-Trent
