RUSHCLIFFE YOUNGSTERS GIVEN COUNCIL APPRENTICE OPPORTUNITY
Two apprentices from Rushcliffe, Daniel Goswell (17) and Thomas Macinnes (16), recently joined Rushcliffe Borough Council as modern apprentices at the depot. Thomas and Daniel will be working towards an NVQ in environment and community recycling, and they will be involved in all aspects of the work carried out by the recycling2go team.
In addition, they will attend college doing some work on literacy and numeracy, as well as their modules on all things green. They will spend time emptying bins, as well as learning the ropes with office-based staff to find out more about how the Council gets views from residents and how it encourages high participation and recycling rates.
Daniel, who is from Cotgrave and went to Dayncourt School, said: “I was really pleased when I was told after the interview that I had got the job I have already undergone some basic health and safety training, as well as spending time in the customer services centre listening to what our residents ring in about. I have also been given a mentor, Duncan Wilson, who has been here for a long time and will be showing me the ropes. I can’t wait to get started properly.”
Thomas, who lives in West Bridgford, left school recently and has already carried out some reversing and bin lift training and will be linking up with his mentor, Keith Sayers.
Thomas said: “I am really pleased that I have been given Keith as a mentor. He has been here a along time and is someone I can go to if I am not quite sure where something is or how something is done. I am really looking forward to this opportunity and working for my local council.”
Darryl Burch, Waste and Fleet Operations Manager, added: “We are delighted to welcome both Daniel and Thomas to the team. We already have two established apprentices at the depot and have seen first-hand the benefits for them, the Council, and also for the mentors who help them.
“It is a great opportunity for them both and I am sure they are going to do a great job. We hope to get a further two apprentices in during the summer and our advert has just gone out. It is something that we all totally support as it meets our priorities of not only delivering a sustainable environment, but also investing in our young people to ensure they achieve their potential and make a positive contribution to society.”
