INNER WHEEL CHARITY PRESENTATION

At the June meeting of the Inner Wheel Club of Bingham, president Monica Jeffs presented cheques to the two charities she chose for her year in office.  Volunteer representative, Dave Gibbon, accepted the cheque on behalf of Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, and Sarah Macey, community fundraiser, accepted one on behalf of Maggie’s Nottingham, the planned cancer care centre.
The Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance is based at RAF Waddington and is reliant upon charitable support. The helicopter, being unaffected by road congestion, country roads, heavy vehicles or road works, can reach any destination in Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire in 19 minutes. An air ambulance provides an important and sometimes vital additional patient care service for the most critically ill and injured patients. In March 2008 they completed their 10,000th mission since 1994.
The campaign to raise £3 million to build a Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre in Nottingham got off to a tremendous start. Maggie’s has purchased a prominent location in the grounds of Nottingham City Hospita and planning permission has been granted. Piers Gough, CBE, of CZWG Architects, has donated the design for the centre, with Nottingham-born Sir Paul Smith designing the interior.
Maggie’s Nottingham will be a calm, uplifting drop-in centre where anyone affected by cancer can go whenever they want. The professionally staffed centres are used by people at the time of diagnosis, throughout treatment and beyond. Emotional and psychological support is offered together with information, benefits advice and many other forms of support and self-help. Everything is free of charge.
