PIKE FISHERMAN WANTED
Pike’ fishmen wanted urgently for the Grantham Canal (pictured below). Over the past few weeks the young Mallard and Swan signets have been decimated by the apparent existence of Pike or similar in the canal. I recently returned two fledgling ducks into the canal only to see them snatched within some 15 seconds.

i had to comment on this letter in sheer disbelieve of the mentality of some people ! although not properly names whoever wrote in with this article clearly is asking anglers to kill the pike or what ever monster lurks beneath the water!! i regularly lure fish on a large section of the canal and yes there is a healthy population of pike,no monsters but equally plenty of ducks and other wildfowl surly this person understands the natural course of nature. Is the same person going to put an add out for BIG GAME HUNTERS to go to Africa to cull the “apparent existance of lions or similar” on the plains that are eating all the baby gazels and like !!!!!!!
yours sincerly

totally agree with the above comment, as a member of notts anglers i regularly fish the canal in question and saw three pike belly up last time i went (around 4 weeks ago)
Im wondering what the legal aspects of this are now and will certainly have a few words to say if i see anyone killing these magnificent creatures which help to keep the waters healthy by eating ill and injured fish mostly
The Grantham Canal is not swarming with Pike, far from it…. A lot have been poached out for the table by E European workers, I know this as I have witnessed it.
Go back to hugging your tree hippy
its all part of nature
“young Mallard and Swan signets have been decimated by the apparent existence of Pike”
I doubt very much they have been decimated. Pike are NOT indiscriminte killers, they just eat when they are hungry. They are not an evil monster, nor are they a nuisance, they are a vital piece of the ecosystem that help to keep our waters healthy by eating sick, dead and diseased fish. In my opinon a water must be in good health if the pike are turning to other items of food.
I’m disgusted that this has been allowed to be posted because in my opinion it is asking people to go down and catch a pike in order to kill it. Any pike angler worth his/her salt would NEVER kill the capture. And to remove fish from a water and relocate it without the correct paperwork and authorisation is illegal.
Also, it is well known that if you get rid of large pike, there is an explosion of smaller pike causing a bigger ‘problem’ in the future.
Personal note to MC Gamston — You ought to be ashamed of yourself !!!
It’s most probably a mink thats eating the ducks not a monster pike
I feel I must comment on this post.
As a pike angler, I think that asking anglers to catch and destroy pike, is not only morally reprehensible, but the legality of the situation MUST be considered. Any angler caught destroying pike are likely to incur a severe financial penalty and even face criminal charges, and rightly so.
The pike is a fish native to this country’s water way’s and has as much right to be here as you or I.
Would you kill all predatory animals because they prey on the young and weak?.
This behaviour ensures that stock bloodlines remain as strong as possible as nature intended.
How would match and carp angler feel if us pike angler done it to carp and roach?.
i feel i must comment also im a angler that fishes for any fish that swims and i say if i saw anyone club a pike i would club them
i also fish on gamston canal
i also fish on gamston canal
