CADETS IN THE THICK OF THE ACTION
It has been a busy period for 209 (West Bridgford) Squadron. Local air cadets were joined by cadets from 1936 (Newton) Sqn in a joint weekend camp at the John’s Lee Camp site in Leicestershire. An extensive training programme was provided ensuring that everyone from the newest to the most experienced cadets learnt something new.
There was a heavy emphasis on hands-on activities including rope bridge exercises, bivi building and stretcher races. Other training like camouflage and concealment, and movement and observation exercises, were preparation for the night navigation exercise, which incorporated all the training throughout the day into one consolidated team event.
Cadets also took part in the Albert Ball Memorial Parade at Nottingham Castle, raised £629 bag packing at Morrisons, completed a Duke of Edinburgh Award practice walk, three new cadets flew for the first time at RAF Cranwell, and the squadron entered a team into the South and East Midlands Wing Athletics competition.
Sgt James Greenhalgh set a new record for the high jump of 1.73m and cadet Michael Disney finished second in the 400m. Both were selected to represent the Wing at the Central and East Region Athletics competition.
