TESCO ROW BREWING IN KEYWORTH

A row is brewing in Keyworth over plans to build a new Tesco supermarket on the site of the former Wright’s Garage on Selby Lane. Tesco have proposed a medium-sized store with 70 parking spaces.
Mark Harrison, a community relations consultant working on the project for Tesco, said:
“This is not a Tesco superstore arriving in your village, there is no other store of this size in the country. It’s a new generation of stores designed for small market towns or villages. This store has been designed to be small enough to fit in but large enough to accommodate a large
weekly shop.”
A group has been formed called ‘No Tesco in Keyworth’ and they have been handing out leaflets around Keyworth to register their protest at the plans. A recent survey conducted in the village found that more than half (58%) were against a Tesco’s being built on Selby Lane.
A public consultation is expected in the next couple of months and Tesco may soon submit a planning application. This will be considered by Keyworth Parish Council – residents and local amenity groups will also be able to comment. Rushcliffe Borough Council will make the actual decision after a 13-week period of consultation.
