ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR 209 SQUADRON
Over 80 guests, including the Mayor of Rushcliffe Peter McGowen and Wing Commander Nigel Dickinson (CO of South and East Midlands Wing), attended the annual awards and presentation dinner of 209 (West Bridgford) Squadron. These were held in a hotel in the centre of Nottingham.
Before the awards were announced, flying officer Steven Richards (officer commanding of 209) reviewed the previous 12 months.
He said: “Starting in 2009 we had a significant growth in cadet numbers. With a comprehensive and well structured training programme, 209 Squadron has progressed in the wing’s rankings making a substantial improvement. This is due to the dedication and hard work of all the cadets and staff concerned.”
The following cadets received awards…
- Flight Sergeant Joe Hammond received the Sports Award (Male) and the Flying and Gliding Award.
- Cadet Sarah Bramley received the Poppy Award for Fund Raising.
- Corporal Josh Lee-Taylor received the Best Community Award & Best NCO Award.
- Cadet Michael Disney received the Shooting Award.
- Cadet Bradley Wing received the
Fieldcraft Award.
- Cadet Serena Linley received the Best Cadet and Sports Award (Female).
- Cadet Stephanie Willett received the Best New Cadet Award.
Cadet Willet also acted as ‘Mr Vice’ saying grace before the meal and entertaining the guests with jokes after the speeches. Cdt Willett said she was quite honoured to be ‘Mr Vice’ but was nervous about being able to find a good RAF joke.
Councillor Peter McGowan (Mayor of Rushcliffe) said) after the awards: “What strikes me is that the achievements are so impressive for young people and the wonderful support given by the parents and squadron staff.”
