WHOSE LITTER IS IT ANYWAY?

A survey by Keep Britain Tidy found that 38% of litter in Nottingham was left over packaging from fast food related litter. Keep Britain Tidy completed a national survey in 20 English cities to find out what litter is being dropped on the streets. The litter collected was examined to see how much was branded with manufacturers’ logos and names.
Nottingham was one of the chosen cities and the evidence shows that 38% of litter was the left over packaging from fast food-related litter. The next most common items were confectionery wrappers (18%), drinks (15%) and chewing gum (3%). The food packaging litter tells an interesting story, too. The top five most littered brands in Nottingham are: Greggs 19%, McDonald’s 10%, Cadbury 7%, Mars Incorporated 4%
and KP Snacks 4%
In Nottingham, McDonald’s are in negotiations with the City Council to help reduce the amount of litter on the floor. They are proposing to support additional cleansing around the McDonalds sites in the city centre. Many other fast food businesses are also co-operating with the council to reduce litter outside their premises during the night time.
Cllr Katrina Bull said: “Nottingham is a clean city but food litter is a problem that needs to be tackled. It is up to all of us to make sure that we put our litter in the bin.”
