SUPPORT THE RCVS SCHEME
As part of its cost-cutting programme from April 2010, Nottinghamshire County Council is proposing to withdraw its financial support for the voluntary transport scheme, operated by the Rushcliffe Community and Voluntary Service (RCVS).
Around 50 volunteer drivers, using their own cars, provide transport at concessionary rates for people over 60 (although some with disabilities are younger) living in Rushcliffe, who cannot use or do not have access to public transport for health appointments, shopping trips, educational and social activities.
I am told there are over 350 users of the scheme. A great number use it because of the support of a trusted volunteer and the additional convenience public transport cannot provide.
The RCVS is equally reliant on the modest financial assistance from the local authority to continue providing the service. I know a number of people who are either users of the scheme or are volunteer drivers. All are deeply concerned about the effect the loss of the scheme would have on the lives of many older and less mobile folk.
So I urge your readers to show their opposition to the Council’s proposal by responding to its Budget Consultation exercise and by writing to their MP and local councillors.
