FIRST PART OF NOTTINGHAM LEFT BANK FLOOD SCHEME COMPLETE

The flood defences which form the first section of the impressive £51 million Nottingham Left Bank Flood Alleviation Scheme are in place ahead of time. Work on the section between Sawley and the River Erewash is now substantially finished and this part of the defence is ready to help protect people living and working in Sawley, Trent Meadows and parts of Long Eaton from flooding. Environment Agency contractors will remain on site to carry out minor finishing works.
Extending for an impressive 27 kilometres along the River Trent between the M1 at Sawley and Radcliffe Railway Viaduct in Colwick, and providing flood protection for 16,000 properties in Sawley, Long Eaton, Attenborough, Rylands, Nottingham and Colwick, the Nottingham Left Bank Flood Alleviation Scheme is one of the biggest flood risk management schemes in England and Wales.
The flood defence challenges are different in each location, but all 27 kilometres of the defence must work together to protect the city.
Area Flood and Coastal Risk Manager, Innes Thomson, said: “The Sawley and Trent Meadows section is the first link in a chain of flood defences that will eventually stretch along 27 kilometres of the River Trent. It is one of the biggest and most complex flood alleviation schemes ever built in Britain
“People in Sawley and Trent Meadows can breathe a bit easier now this part of the scheme is complete as they have some of the best modern flood protection currently available. However, no defence is infallible and anyone living or working behind a flood defence should remain prepared.”
