DO YOU WANT £3,000 TO VISIT THE USA?

If you are aged between 21-30 and live or work in Nottinghamshire, you are being encouraged to apply for the Nottinghamshire Roosevelt Travelling Scholarship, which offers the chance to travel to the USA for up to three months. No formal qualifications are necessary and this unique career and personal development opportunity provides successful applicants with up to £3,000 and a return flight to the USA with which to make a visit of between four weeks and three months.
Scholars will be able to experience the American way of life, whilst investigating a work related topic of their choice and acting as an ambassador for the city of Nottingham and the county of Nottinghamshire.
The two 2009 scholars, Kim Melvill-Smith (age 28) and Holly Turner (age 23), have both recently returned to the UK following their scholarship travels.
Kim is a teacher at Henry Whipple Primary School in Bestwood and a strong advocator for inclusive education, researched the ways American schools work to encourage the participation of pupils, parents and the wider community in the education system.  Holly works for the East Midlands Development Agency and she learnt how urban regeneration in the USA addresses social inclusion with regards to race and ethnicity.
She said: “In three months I’ve laid at the edge of the Grand Canyon, celebrated Halloween in New Orleans and watched the sunrise at Cape Cod. I’ve eaten genuine Chicago hot dogs, a Texan BBQ and had enough cups of coffee to last me a life-time.
“I’ve had an amazing insight into issues of social inclusion across America and been overwhelmed by the generosity of the people that I met along the way. Being a Nottinghamshire Roosevelt Scholar has been an amazing experience that I’ll never forget and I highly recommend it to anyone.”
