COMPUTER AND INTERNET ACCESS
Families in Clifton and Silverdale on low-incomes can apply for a Home Access Grant to receive a free computer and internet access. The Home Access Programme is a national government initiative which provides practical and financial support for over 4,000 low income families in the area.
It enables pupils and their family members to have access to technology at home to support learning and is being rolled out across the city. Eligible families can apply to Capita for a Home Access Grant to purchase a computer and internet package from a number of approved suppliers.
Eligible families are those with children in school years 3 to 9 who attend state maintained schools on a full-time basis and did not receive a computer from the ‘Computers for Pupils’ or the ‘Home Access’ Programmes in the past. Of these families, the second criterion is that the family fits one of the following:
the child is eligible for free school meals; or
parent(s) on income support; receives income-based job seekers allowance; receives the Child Tax Credit and has an income of less than £16,040; have guaranteed pension credit; have an income related employment support allowance or receive support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act;
children in care and young people with additional needs (including special educational needs) may also be eligible. Social workers and foster carers will need to apply for a Home Access Grant on behalf of children in care.
Home Access packages have been designed with learners needs in mind and consist of a portable or desktop PC, pre-installed productivity, e-safety (parental controls) and assistive technology applications, one year’s service and support including warranty and re-instatement service in the event of theft and one year’s broadband connectivity.
