SUFFOLK TRIP FOR LOCAL AIR CADETS
A dozen air cadets from 209 Sqn travelled to Suffolk to fly in a RAF Search and Rescue Sea King helicopter of ‘B’ Flight, 22 Squadron. The cadets were briefed by one of the aircrew and then split into two groups. They were then kitted out with flying helmets which included an intercom system which allowed them to listen to the aircrew during the flight. Each group had a 20 minute flight during which the pilots displayed themanoeuvrability of the Sea King helicopter and the radar operator and Loadmaster demonstrated their equipment.
Cadet, Sarah Bramley (15), said: “It was really good and really enjoyable. It was interesting listening to the aircrew and fun when the helicopter was twisting and turning.”
Meanwhile, 209 Sqn punched well above their weight at the recent South and East Midlands Wing Swimming Competition finishing 10th out of the 29 squadrons that took part. The junior boys team’s effort was outstanding as they finished 3rd in their category.
209’s Sarah Middleton said: “We went out in strength with 20 Cadets attending. They’d put in a lot of effort over the previous weeks to put in the best team possible. It’s been a long time since 209 Sqn has been mentioned at an awards ceremony and it was a moment of pride for all cadets and staff.
“209 is going from strength to strength and on behalf of all the staff I would like to thank all the cadets for the hard work they have put in. I’m very happy it has paid off with this great result.”
