CRIME CONTINUES TO FALL IN NOTTS
Crime across Nottinghamshire is continuing to fall according to latest police figures. Between April and November 2009, there have been 10,342 fewer offences, a 13% drop compared to the same period in 2008. Serious acquisitive crime, which includes burglary and robbery, has fallen by 20.7%, a reduction of 3,713 offences. There have been 951 fewer victims of burglary and 201 fewer robbery victims.
There have been 2,561 fewer vehicles subjected to being stolen or broken into, bringing Nottinghamshire Police’s figures more in line with their most similar groups, with a reduction year to date of 24.7%.
A reduction of 405 offences of violence against the person also reflects the hard work officers have put in during the summer to avoid the spike that has been seen in previous years. Since April, the force has been instrumental in dealing with three significant protests, two at Radcliffe-on-Soar power station and one in the city centre, involving the English Defence League and United Against Fascism. A number of high profile football matches have been successfully policed and operational activity to crack down on alcohol-related violence and knife crime is also having a positive impact on the number of reported incidents.
Detectives continue to prepare cases for a number of homicides set for court in the forthcoming months and have already seen a number of successful prosecutions. This is also the sixth year that crime has been continued to fall.
Deputy Chief Constable Peter Davies said: “We are determined to continually drive down crime across Nottinghamshire and we are pleased to see we are heading in the right direction.
Having a visible policing presence in the areas most affected by crime is increasing public confidence and helping to deter offenders. We are regularly adapting our operational tactics to make it even more difficult for criminals to operate and are working with partner agencies to provide a quick and efficient response to local issues.
“With the implementation of Policing for You with 20/20 Vision, we are identifying risky places, where people may feel unsafe. We intend to put more officers back into the front line, get better detection rates, improve our productivity and of course continue to reduce crime. I recognise that crime is one of the public’s main concerns and want to assure them we are doing everything we can to reduce offences even further across the whole of Nottinghamshire.”
